• 4 slices French bread
  • olive oil flavored cooking spray
  • 1 lb extra lean ground beef (I use 88% lean for this recipe)
  • salt & pepper
  • 4 slices monterey jack cheese , cut to fit bread slices
  • 1 (7 ounce) can whole mild green chilies , drained and cut into wide strips
  • 1 If necessary, start coals heating (if using), start grill, or preheat broiler.
  • 2 Spritz bread slices with olive oil on each side.
  • 3 Shape beef into oblong patties to fit the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • 4 Grill or broil patties until cooked to taste, about 12-15 minutes for medium well (depending on heat source).
  • 5 Meanwhile, broil or toast bread slices, turning once, until golden on both sides.
  • 6 Top patties with cheese slices and grill or broil a few seconds longer, until cheese barely starts to melt.
  • 7 Place patties on toasted bread, top with chili strips, and serve.
